How good gut bacteria help reduce the risk for heart disease

In a recent paper published in Journal of Biological Chemistry, Joe Krzycki and his colleagues describe an alternative pathway for carnitine (a molecule found in red meat) metabolism in the gut bacterium. Their results suggest that bacterial metabolic activities could promote cardiovascular health by preventing the buildup of toxin precursors. The paper was named an Editor’s Choice and further highlighted in a commentary “Taking the Me out of meat”. So far, the paper has been written up in 43 stories by 41 media outlets. Its Altmetric score speaks for itself.
