Undergraduate Admissions

High School Preparation
The best preparation for the microbiology major is a strong math and science program with biology and chemistry courses. If possible, computer literacy and/or statistics should be included. Many incoming students will earn college credit in high school through programs like Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or College Credit Plus (CCP). These types of experiences are welcomed but not required.
How to Major in Microbiology at Ohio State
Students can declare this major as part of applying to Ohio State or at any time during their undergraduate career. The first two years of studies will prioritize foundational courses in math, general and organic chemistry, & biology, while the first microbiology major core course is also usually taken in the sophomore year. As students take further microbiology courses, they will complete other major supporting courses, including statistics and physics.
General Education & College Requirements
Throughout their undergraduate career, students will take courses towards the New General Education (GEN) requirements. The GEN is a body of courses designed to ensure that all students are prepared to be engaged, resilient, and adaptable citizens and leaders for life. Completing the GEN curriculum includes several GEN Foundations such as 'Writing & Information Literacy', 'Historical & Cultural Studies', and 'Social Behavioral Sciences', along with two GEN Thematic Pathways, which must include 'Citizenship for a Diverse & Just World'. Students completing a degree within the College of Arts and Sciences, which houses the Department of Microbiology, must also complete a world language proficiency requirement.
